What is ABS Filament?

Acrylonitrile-butadiene styrene (ABS) is usually the second most popular filament for 3D printers after PLA. But that just means it’s the second most popular. In terms of material properties, ABS is actually moderately superior to PLA, even though printing on it is a bit more difficult. ABS products are highly durable and able to withstand high temperatures, but 3D printer enthusiasts should be aware of the higher printing temperature of this filament, its tendency to warp when cooled, and strong potentially dangerous fumes. Be sure to print on a heated table and in a well-ventilated room (or closet).

When should it be used?

ABS is strong – capable of withstanding high stress and temperature. It is also moderately flexible, although these are by far the best qualities for future use. Combined, these properties make ABS a good all-purpose filament for general-purpose 3D printers, but it’s actually better suited for items that are frequently handled, dropped, or heated. Examples include phone cases, wearable toys, tool handles, automotive trim components, and electrical enclosures.

ABS Odorless: Low VOC, odorless, brighter color. Improved interlayer bonding, more impact-resistant models.
